The Eternal God: Eternal Purpose, Eternal Hope!
(Isa. 40:28; Jer. 10:10)
(Ps. 90:2) “…even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
(Isa. 57:15) “The High & lofty One that inhabiteth eternity”
(Deut. 33:27) “The eternal God is thy refuge”
(see also Ps. 41:13; 106:48; John 17:5; Isa. 40:28; Jer. 10:10)
The concept of Everlastingness rises like a lofty mountain throughout the Bible. What do we mean by Eternal? We tend to think it means something that will never End. But to be Eternal means it had no Beginning as well as no End.
Thus the fallacy of the Question: “Who Created God?
God had no Beginning, so He doesn’t need nor have a Cause.
Only things that have a beginning need a cause. And that included every thing in our World & Universe. The universe has a beginning. Therefore the universe has a cause.
THE IDOLS OF MODERN DAY SCIENTISTS
If the 1 True God is eternal then expect atheistic Science to make some eternal idol to take His place! For many years Science substituted the Universe for God by declaring it eternal:
“The Cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be”
(Carl Sagan, Cosmos, (1980) p. 4).
Atheistic Science used to idolize an Eternal Universe! An eternal Universe needs no explanation for its origin! But between the 1930’s and 1960’s the Scientific Facts eventually proved the Universe had a beginning. (So this idol was toppled).
But as often happens with proud PHd’s, “Professing to be Wise they Become Fools!” (Rom. 1:19-22). Atheistic Scientists in their determination to deny God Created two new gods:
Time – they make the Universe really old!
Change by Chance – unplanned, undersigned, accidental change that happens by chance over long periods of time led to everything that exists.
But we must ask ourselves: “What is Time?”
It is “The succession of consecutive changes or events that occur in our Space/Time World.” It is “the measurable period during which an action, process, or condition exists or continues: DURATION”
It just a word to describe something! The laws of thermodynamics prove time is actually an enemy of the theory of evolution!
We must also ask ourselves: “What is Change by Chance?”
It is “The process or end result of becoming different:
“to make different in some particular: ALTER.” The intransitive verb means: “to become different” “Chance & Change” are merely words describing an observation. Have you surrendered your mind to the idols of Time & Chance? To think that Time & change by Chance can explain the existence of everything in our World & Universe is absurd!
THEY ARE MERE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THINGS –
NOT MECHANISMS THAT ACCOMPLISH THINGS!
But “Time” & “Chance” are two very important words for everyone of us! Because At Some Point in Time we are all Confronted with our “Last Chance to be saved.”
Are you putting off the most important decision of your life? Your eternity depends on it!
GLORIOUS REVELATIONS OF ETERNITY
The Entire Bible is filled with glorious Revelations & Visions of Eternity. Many of God’s unique & Divine Attributes all converge upon the Fact that the Creator must be an Eternal Being. That God is Eternal is the logical conclusion from His other Attributes.
The God Who is “Self Existent” can never cease existing. Why?
Because He needs nothing outside Himself to exist. His name is “I AM that I AM.”
The God Who is “Self Sufficient” can never cease to be. Nothing within His own being can ever cause Him to change. God is “Life” itself & needs nothing outside Himself to Live. God is “Omnipotent” so nothing outside Himself could ever cause Him to change! God is “Immutable” so it is impossible for Him to ever change
God can never grow old or age & thus must be Eternal. He will always be what He has always been! The great “I AM.”
Putting our trust in such a God (Jesus Christ) means we will be made perfect for all Eternity! Hallelujah! (read Psalm 16:8-11)
JESUS IS THE EVERLASTING SON
Jesus; the Everlasting Son broke into time in the incarnation (Isa. 9:6). “Thou, Bethlehem Ephratah…out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Mic. 5:2).
Jesus is “the King eternal” (I Tim. 1:17; 2 Tim. 1:10; Ps. 93:2)
Both God the Father & God the Son are Everlasting:
“For unto us a child is born, unto us, a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
The Child, the Son, is one with the Everlasting Father.
The Father is everlasting. You can’t be a Father without a Son.
You can’t be a Son without a Father. So both the Father & the Son are Everlasting. Augustine explained it this way: “Strike a match. If you can Show me the flame without the light then I could show you the Father without the Son.”
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ETERNAL
“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:14).
The Spirit is there at the Beginning of History (Gen. 1:2) and there at the end of History (Rev. 22:17).
GOD DWELLS IN ETERNITY; TIME DWELLS IN GOD
(Isa. 40:22; Ps. 68:33)
God appears at the beginning of Time & end of Time Simultaneously! Thus the Eternity of God explains how the amazing & unique phenomena of the Bible Prophesying the Future is Possible. God’s Word, the Bible is the only book in the world that infallibly reveals the Future! Even your Future! (I John 5:11-13). Check it out!
God “is” at Time’s beginning. But God “is” at the Beginning & End of Time simultaneously! So He perfectly knows everything that will ever happen in all History! God rebukes every false religion that doesn’t know the Beginning of our world nor how it will End. He demands:
“… let them show the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come” (Isa 41:22). Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods…” (Isa. 41:23; also Isa. 45:21; 46:9-10; 48:3-5; John 13:19)
Being Eternal, God does not have to wait for the succession of events to occur. For God, everything that will happen has already happened. God already knows everything that will happen in Time because He views it from the vantage point of eternity!
Illustration: Watching the Rose Parade from the vantage point of a Skyscraper. Watching from street level you only see one float at a time. But if you mount up with wings as an eagle You could see the beginning & end of the parade simultaneously! God watches the Parade of Human History from the vantage point of Eternity!
“It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers…” (Isaiah 40:22). Our God is “the Most High God” (Psalm 2:4; Gen. 14:18-22; Num. 24:16-17; Ps. 83:18; Dan. 5:21). That is why God: “Declares the end from the beginning and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isa. 46:10; Isa. 41:22-23; Acts 15:18)
LIFE CHANGING APPLICATIONS: Psalm 90
“… Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations” (Ps 90:1) Before you formed “the earth & the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Ps 90:2).
1st Application:
Since God is Eternal, He is forever the one safe refuge for His time-driven children. For us time is running out! But If you have eternal life “in Christ” time never runs out! We were made for Both Time & Eternity. Sin has made Time a cruel prison. All within us cries for life & permanence, yet everything around us reminds us of Mortality, Aging & Death. There is nothing more important in this Life than to Prepare for Eternity & help others Prepare for Eternity.
How can we escape the consequences of sin that made Time a Prison? Through faith in the Everlasting Father & Everlasting Son.
(John 17:3) “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3; I John 5:11-12, 20). Only 1 person ever abolished Death! “… our Saviour Jesus Christ, hath abolished death, and hath brought life & immortality to light through the gospel (2Tim. 1:10; John 5:24-29; 20:31; I Cor. 15:53; 2 Cor. 5:4).
2nd Application:
“The days of our years are 70; and if by reason of strength they be 80, yet is their strength labour & sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Ps. 90:10, 12) (Use your time wisely!)
Illustration: Do You have all your Marbles?
3rd Application: Prepare for Eternity
“… establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it” (Ps. 90:17).
Life seems too short & vain. (Book of Ecclesiastes). We never do or accomplish everything we hoped. So a very important questions to ask ourselves is: “What am I doing in this Life that will last for all Eternity?
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1Cor. 15:58)
(read: Matt. 10:42; Mk. 9:41; I Cor. 3:8; Gal. 6:9; Heb. 6:10).
